The building will be on the corner of High and Ward Streets, next to the Currency Lass Hotel, on a site that is currently being used as a car yard.
Maitland City Council approved the 17 apartment development will be located on the corner of High and Ward Streets, next to the Currency Lass Hotel, on a site currently being used as car yard.
A council document said the development would provide “a positive social and economic benefit for the community with provision of additional housing, employment for local tradespersons and a small commercial component to add additional economic vibrancy to the existing CBD area of Maitland.”
The development will include 17 car spaces, a rooftop communal space and ground level commercial premises.
It received three submissions against the development with concerns including density, traffic and privacy.
But the council document said, “the issues raised in objection to the proposal do not warrant refusal of the application or can be readily addressed through conditions of consent.”
Labor councillor Robert Aitchison threw his support behind the proposal.
“I agree with the officer’s recommendation, and feel we should go ahead with this,” he said.
