Last week the structure received a range of accolades at the 2019 Newcastle Architecture Awards at Merewether Surfhouse.
Judges were particularly impressed by its unification of the business district and the Hunter River.
Perhaps the most exciting moment was when the building won the sought after Jury's Prize.
"The architecture has a strong civic presence in a street full of historic buildings and is a landmark when viewed from the river," the jury said.
"It will no doubt be the catalyst for further revitalisation of this dynamic regional community."
The council-commissioned Riverlink building was officially opened in April 2018.
Construction began in 2016, funded with $9.92 million from the NSW Liberal National Government's Resources for Regions program.
It was designed by CHROFI Architects with McGregor Coxall.
