Birdlife, on the other hand is at an all time low in our area of the Hunter, so for the wildlife photographer there's not much option.
I am told this lack of birdlife is due to the long drought and fires that Australia experienced during the summer months.

Insects are a fascinating subject, whether it is dragonflies, robber flies, butterflies and so on ... we have thousands of subjects in Australia.
The best best time to get some dramatic shots is dawn and a short period there after.
From my experience the best area is probably along the edges of swamp areas as the insects tend to be largely immobile at the time. Also you find dragonfly lava climbing up reeds and hatching, drying out their wings and so on ... always a decent image.
At this time you often find some fantastic spider shots, latching onto trapped insects in their web, maybe doing a bit of silking.
I'm missing my birdlife, but must admit that this is till a pretty exciting time for nature photographers.
