Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Catherine Cusack, who made the announcement on Monday, said the grant will help to upgrade 138 bus shelters across the Maitland region to meet accessibility standards.
"These upgraded shelters will help to make public transport and connections between bus stops more accessible for Maitland and the surrounding communities," Ms Cusack said.
"They will include accessible features like connecting paths, signage, tactile indicators and seating."
The Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Grants Scheme (CPTIGS) provides subsidies to support the construction or upgrade of bus stop infrastructure generally owned and maintained by local councils across rural and regional NSW.
"Together with Maitland City Council's contribution, this funding will make a great difference in helping achieve our goal to meet disability standards and accessibility for all bus stops across the Maitland LGA," Maitland mayor Loretta Baker said.
More than $2.1 million in NSW Government grants will see 509 projects supported across more than 40 local government areas including new and upgraded bus shelters, security lighting, new bus stop seats, timetable information boards and tactile indicators.
