Liberal councillors Mitchell Griffin and Sally Halliday will table the motion tonight, calling on council to allow local general practitioners and healthcare providers to book council owned community centres for free.
In a release, the pair highlighted one of the barriers preventing GPs from being able to offer mass doses of the vaccine is the size of their practices which are also treating their normal patients.
"All levels of government have accountability to assist the roll out of the vaccination. This includes Local Government", Cr Griffin said.
"With many of our community centres out in the suburbs, this motion provides the opportunity for GPs to bring the vaccine directly to the community."
IN OTHER NEWS:
Currently, healthcare providers are able to offer the AstraZeneca vaccination to the local Maitland community.
"The popularity of recent mass clinics being held by The Lorn Surgery highlight the demand within Maitland for access to the AstraZeneca vaccination," Cr Halliday said.
"This would enable our community to be vaccinated sooner reducing the risk of community transmissions and severity of the virus.
"Under council's strategic plan we have a responsibility towards helping our community feel safe moving throughout the city, and if we can assist in any way we should be."
