Australia's Most Ordinary Rig 2022: Winner reveals the gruelling training regime

Think Miss World meets Victoria's Secret, mix it with blokes, budgie smugglers and angel wings and you're there.

The Australia-wide call for the best rig was loud and colourful, and it all came to a climax on Saturday at hip rooftop bar The Ivy in Sydney.

Winner Josh 'Clutz' Clutterbuck, 27, travelled from his home in Brisbane to compete, and reckons his success came down to preparation and competition-day dancing.

"I've had a of greasy food and a lot of beers leading up to it. It's almost like a lifetime's work coming to fruition," he said.

"You can't do anything half-heartedly or you won't get the results you're after."

Dressed to impress in budgy smugglers, the 10 entrants were asked to make their own angel wings for a poolside parade, followed by a 'talent' competition.

"I shook my little booty around," he said.

"I can also drop it down low.

"I did an interpretative dance to Kylie Minogue On a Night Like This and dropping it down low to Kylie was my talent."

Judges included long distance runner Nedd Brockmann, six-time Red Bull cliff diving world champion Rhiannan Iffland, and rugby league legend Sam Thaiday, who were impressed by the entrants

"Josh had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand during the talent component of the day," Jimmy Exelby from Budgy Smuggler said.

Amid all the fun and angel wings, there was a serious side to the event, and this was what appealed to Mr Clutterbuck.

"If I can go out there and show what I've got, then other people can be more comfortable with how they look," he said.

"Unfortunately, earlier this year, I lost my best mate to mental health so entering the comp and getting around these guys is doing stuff for him."

Mr Clutterbuck, his partner and parents are still on a high since the big win.

"Mum and dad have been stoked and mum's posted it all over Facebook and social media. All my aunties are having a competition to see who can share it the most," he said.

Mr Clutterbuck scored $10,000 in prize money - half for him and half to donate to a club or charity. He will donate to his beloved Ashgrove GPS Rugby Union to help with the building cost of new facilities for female players at the club.

Runner up in the competition was Reynor 'Reg' Guildford from the Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

"Reg's talent was the rendition of Tom Holland's Umbrella Lip Sync Battle - and it was steamy," Mr Exelby said.

The two men will compete against the top two from United Kingdom and France, alongside some wildcards from around the globe, in the World's Most Ordinary Rig 2023.

Mr Clutterbuck will now go on to represent Australia in an international Most Ordinary Rig competition.
