Maitland and District Cricket Association secretary Josh Moxey and Maitland District Junior Cricket Association president Glen Findley announced the decision on Facebook.
Moxey said the decision had not been taken lightly but the association had a duty of care to ensure safety of all players.
"Over the past couple of days our region has been, and continues to be, affected by bushfires. Our thoughts go out to those communities most affected at this time," Moxey said.
"The MDCA has spent the last few days evaluating whether cricket matches will proceed as planned this weekend or whether they may need to be postponed or cancelled due to the proximity of the fires and subsequent air quality.
"We have utilised all forecast resources that are available and consulted parties including Cricket NSW and the Bureau of Meteorology at Williamtown
"Taking into consideration these forecasts and prevailing conditions, along with the current AQI for our region we have decided to cancel the round of senior cricket for the MDCA for the weekend of the 7th of December 2019.
"This decision has not been arrived at lightly and please understand that the we have a duty of care to ensure safety of all players remains paramount."
